The Ministry for the Environment’s ecolabel, Environmental Choice New Zealand has rebranded to Eco Choice Aotearoa.
The ecolabel has been running for more than 30 years and operates without fear or favour; certifying products and services that are environmentally preferable, pose no threat to human health and fit-for-purpose.
“Our brand refresh isn’t just about aesthetics. With the rapid acceleration of the climate and biodiversity crises, we all have a responsibility to do more,” says Eco Choice Aotearoa CEO Laura Gemmell. “In the past, we’ve quietly and diligently gone about our work. That simply isn’t enough anymore.”
“Our ecolabel offers an unmatched level of assurance to consumers that what they’re buying is genuinely better for people and planet. And those choices matter,” says Ms Gemmell. “Our strict pass/ fail criteria for products and services are open-source, and businesses who’ve been awarded our ecolabel have opened themselves up to rigorous onsite audits. You cannot buy our ecolabel.”
According to market insights company Kantar, 43 per cent of Kiwis are committed to leading a sustainable lifestyle, but one of the barriers to that, is clear guidance around what is genuinely environmentally preferable.
“For the past 30 years, Eco Choice Aotearoa has provided Government, business, and members of the public with the assurance products bearing the mark, meet high environmental standards and minimise harm to the environment, says Hon. David Parker, Minister for the Environment. “I look forward to Eco Choice Aotearoa continuing to support better environmental outcomes for years to come.”
The Environmental Choice New Zealand logo will remain in use for some time while businesses transition to Eco Choice Aotearoa.
